When are taxes due?

Federal personal income tax returns for the 2011 year are due by Tuesday April 17, 2012. Your federal taxes are due and all returns must be postmarked or eFiled by midnight on April 17. Traditionally, the tax due date is April 15, which is pushed back this year due to a holiday weekend. You can prepare and file your federal taxes for free using online programs such as TurboTax or H&R Block.

Individual state income taxes are generally due on April 17 as well — but please review our State Tax Deadline Chart to check your state’s deadline.

April 17 is also the deadline to file a tax extension — which will buy you 6 months extra time to file your taxes — with an extension, your new tax deadline for your 2011 taxes will be October 15, 2012.
